Dear Bruce, My retirement is approaching fast! The realization smacked me square in the face - I am going to become one of the millions who are in the Baby Boomer generation to enter into a new phase of life! Am I ready? My finances looked good but I certainly hadn't made any plans on what I was going to do with my life and all the free time on my hands. Being very active and healthy, the prospect of not having an idea where I was going was unacceptable. I'm used to goal setting, having a plan and now I saw none existed for a crucial part of my life! Kimberly - my wife and coach - and I sat down to figure out just how WAS I going to create this new phase of my life. What were my strengths? What motivators did work provide me? What activities did I need to satisfy those motivators? What was I going to do with the free time? How does all this fit in to my retirement plan? What I share with you in my newsletter is the result of my quest to develop a compelling retirement. One where I get out of bed excited about the coming day. Will your Age of Fulfilment be compelling too?! |

Plan For Change In Retirement ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are many things that will change in your life
when you retire. Some items that come to mind are -
your financial status; how you move through your
day and the amount of free time you'll have. There
will be changes in your relationship with your
significant other if you have one.
Also, without work your view of yourself and the world will change. While many of us plan or have planned for our financial aspects of retirement little if any planning is done for the non-financial aspects. People neglect to figure out what motivators their work has fulfilled for them! For example, work may offer challenges, purpose, status, accomplishment, personal interaction and problem solving. Failing to plan the non-financial portion of retirement is dancing with flunking this phase of your life and creating a very unhappy period. What you want to do is create a new lifestyle for yourself rather than accepting and adapting to the change. I imagine you'd want a lifestyle that is an age of fulfillment, one full of purpose and enrichment! To do this means thinking ahead before you actually retire. Envision how you'd want your retirement to be and then start planning around that vision. What activities will replace those motivators at work that give you satisfaction? Do you have any hobbies or special interests? If not, now is the time to explore to see what ones will add satisfaction and quality to your life. Think about your friendships and relationships - how will these change after you leave work? Will you renew old friendships? Another point to consider in your planning is whether you'll work part-time. Will you pursue another career? Will you start a new business? Planning for retirement requires time and commitment if you're going to have successful one or flunk out! The planning will not be done over night! You do, though, need to begin NOW because the Age of Fulfillment is fast approaching!
